Bicycle Trio

Boise, Idaho

Each of these iconic bicycles activates and plays a different mechanical musical instrument: percussion, xylophone and pipe organ. Hop on, start peddling and create impromptu music with a new friend.

Bicycle Trio

David and Michael designed this artwork to create a sense of place, engagement and activity for the community that is evolving in the "Linen District" a formerly industrial area west of Downtown. Our project is an interactive artwork of three stationary, sculptural bicycles that when ridden, activate a musical instrument in the column to which each is attached. Our goal was to respond to the culture of the neighborhood and encourage spontaneous interactions through music and play. A pipe organ, percussion blocks and xylophone are each powered by pedaling the bikes and turning the handlebars changes the notes. The inspiration came from spending time in the area and reflecting back the vibrant bike and music scenes that characterize the neighborhood. The joys of discovery, as people engage these familiar objects in an unusual context, suddenly creating music, inevitably resulted in smiles and laughter.
